There is progressive revelation about the nature of God in scripture. Jesus came to reveal and make known in fullness the character of God, that had not been known before. He was the first one in scripture to call God Abba Father. So we must draw our understanding of the nature of God from Him.

John 8:7-11
As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.
John 3:16-17
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

So what is love?
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
